47th eurovision Song Contest took place in Estonia, Tallinn on the saturday night of 25th of May. Latvia won the contest with the song "I Wanna" scoring 176 points. The second place was taken by the small island country's, Malta, representative, Ira Losco. The third place was british Jessica Garlick scoring 111 points, the same number of points as 4th placed host's entry, "Runaway", by Sahlene. For the seventh time in a row the hosts finish in the Top 7 (in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 2001 host countries finished even second!). Estonia was the first Eastern-bloc country to have won the contest and therefore hosted it on its territory.

Interesting that originally there was the decision about 22 countries to participate in the contest. 15 came over from last year, and 7 were allowed to return but, later on, EBU (European Broadcast Union) increased the number to 24, allowing Portugal and Israel join in. Ironically, Portugal declined it and was replaced by the eventual winner, Latvia. It's worth noticing that that year's contest was very different and interesting performances-wise. It probably became the "turning point" of the "Eurovision Song Contest" that moved it to the brand new way. We've never seen such variety: the German entrant was born blind, Latvia showed elements of strip-tease in their performance, men from slovenian band were dressed as female flight attendants, Greek entrants moved and looked like robots.

Of course, it's not a contest without controversy. During the show Belgian and Swedish commentators told not to vote for Israeli entrant, Sarit Hadad. However, she got the Belgian 2 points without a single mark from Swedes.
